Chapter 03 : The unexpected turn of event
Anya was sitting in the waiting room all decked up in the Maharashtrian traditional bride attire looking at her reflection in the mirror. While her parents were looking after the guests alongwith her younger sister, Sayami who was also shouldering major of the responsibilities making Anya proud of her. Because for their parents Sayami is spoiled by her, way too much that she would never be able to handle her responsibilities on her own but here she was. She wasn’t only handling herself but everything as perfectly as she could.
But looking at how she was helping them to manage everything and giving her princess treatment instead, Anya knew it was her coping mechanism to distract herself from the fact that she won’t be able to stick with her like she used to once the wedding was done.
They won’t be talking about how they had spent their entire day. Or watch movies and dramas together and crush on the fictional characters. Or gossip about their relatives and how they held themselves back from the comebacks when they were saying something mean to their mother. Or how they won’t be able to fight for silly things. Or peep through their room window to see the drama their neighbours were pulling off.
She sighed as there was a knock on the door and turned to see who was entering through it. She smiled at her friends Anushree, Prachi, Chetna and Manini who entered in with some juice and fruits. She was happy that her school friend Anushree and her college friends Prachi, Chetna and Manini had gelled up together very quickly. Also Vansh, Prachi's boyfriend and her college classmate had very well bonded with Tej, Anushree's husband over the time they shared during her wedding rituals.
“I’ll just drink this.” She picked up the glass knowing very well they would somehow make her drink and eat those fruits. So, to save her and their energies she took it.
“And you all are eating those fruits.” She said sipping on her juice to which they denied at first but later, gave in, at her words.
“Let’s take some pictures.” Manini said as she fished out her phone from her purse.
“Anu di, can I have a minute?” Sayami called out between their photo session making Anya frown as she could see worry etched on her sister’s face even though she tried her best to hide it.
A moment later Anushree called out for Manini and Chetna out while Prachi stayed with Anya making them look at them in confusion. Anya looked at Prachi to which she just shrugged off.
“What happened?” Anya inquired looking at the fake smile she was getting as they entered inside the room again while Prachi narrowed her eyes at them. She knew every person here were trying to hide something from her as she saw Prachi shockingly looking at her phone and Chetna whispering something to her looking straight.
Not getting any valid answer but just their failed attempts of lying she walked out into the corridor in search for her sister who wouldn’t be able to lie to her, that’s when she saw the crowd.
She got anxious thinking something bad had happened to someone and rushed there without caring of her attire and bare feet. As she reached them, she saw her and Gaurav's parents along with some of their and his relatives. She sighed in relief seeing no one was actually hurt but were tensed with something. Before she could ask anything, she froze on her place when she heard a voice of an elderly woman.
"Obviously, it would be her mistake that groom ran away."
"Now, who will want to marry such girl." Came an instant voice from another woman. To be precise from her own relative making her fume in anger seeing the underlying happiness with her fake concern.
"You need not worry about that. My parents are there to worry about me." Anya spits out directly glaring through the soul of that lady making all of them turn around to look at her.
"If in place of him, I had ran away then also you would have questioned my character only. And not point out his qualities. So please zip up!" She continued further as she directly walked towards the said lady and jerked off her fake-assurance-hand from her mother’s shoulder.
"See, this is why you are left at altar." Came another voice to which she just rolled her eyes.
"Groom must have sensed it." Came another one to which she cared less.
"He did a good thing." Another one said but she kept quiet and just listened because her mother had signalled her to keep her mouth shut. Only she knew how she was holding herself back while her patience was wearing thin.
"Who would want to marry such a characterless woman." Another voice came and that was it. She just couldn’t keep standing there and listen them degrading about her character.
"First of all, please learn the meaning of word characterless and then look out for your daughter’s character. Then compare me with her and come to an honest conclusion which I know you will be ashamed off. Because anyhow I would be the one winning the comparison. And also, let me tell you they are not worth to be compared to me." She added the last line because why would she want to be compared to that lady’s child who do anything and everything for money.
"Any more blames or questions? Please feel free because I am really free for an interview today." She looked here and there and then folded her arms and raised one of her hands at her eye level to look at her freshly painted nails.
"And to argue too." She added on because this is the only time she can actually reply to her mean relatives and get away from her parents scoldings.
Her parents and groom’s parents were shocked to see her turned up personality, from shy and reserved to angry and bold. But still figuring out how to diffuse the situation. While her friends and Sayami were trying to figure out a solution for the same as they stood behind the crowd.
“Guys, what's happening?” Vansh asked looking at the tensed faces of his friends as he walked along with Tej and a man who was unknow to them.
Before, while walking towards them they had heard Anya’s previous words making them frown because Anya was someone who would stay quiet and try to find solution to the problem and would never disrespect anyone, until her patience wears thin. And if her patience wears thin then it would be similar to a bomb blast. Maybe the impact will be more than that. Which they actually witnessed few seconds ago.
“Groom ran away.” Prachi informed them with a sigh.
“She always helped us whenever we needed someone to lean on but what are we doing now?” Chetna said while frustration was evident on her face.
“Can’t even think anything to help her in this situation.” Manini joined in as she threw her weight back against the wall.
“Her Aatya might come with her friend’s son whom she badly wanted to marry off with Anya. I tell you he’ll make her life living hell if she did. She doesn’t deserve it.” Anushree voiced out her concern as she tried to search Anya’s Aunt if present in the crowd.
“Knowing her, I’m scared she might just give into her parents’ wishes.” Tej said as he worriedly looks at Anya and kept a hand on his wife’s, Anushree’s shoulder.
“Even if I open my mouth, Tai will shut me up for sure.” Sayami spoke, frustrated as she started pacing around with the stress.
“I just can’t let her do that. She deserves heaven.” She spoke while increasing her speed.
Sayami wanted her sister to stay forever with her but not at the cost of her happiness. This was not what she meant when she prayed for staying longer. She stopped in her track and looked up at the ceiling joining her hands together.
“Bappa, please help my Tai.” She voiced out which got suppressed by another one.
"Anyone in their sense would never want to marry her in their family." Still one of them had a nerve to speak up.
As if marriage is the only solution to survive in this word.
Even though her marriage maybe crumbling she is worried about me. How sweet.
"But I would." Before she could respond to another baseless accusion thrown on her way a loud manly voice came making them turn towards it.
“Who is he?” Prachi nudged her boyfriend, Vansh who turned to look at him, shocked.
“Rayansh Dubey.” Tej informed as he turned back to look at the source of voice.
“Can we trust him with our Anya?” Anushree asked her husband as they stare him.
“I guess yes.” Vansh answered instead.
“No guesses please.” Manini and Sayami said at the same time as they look at this unknown person while Chetna was too stunned to speak.
“I assure you.” He mumbled looking at Sayami as he walked towards the crowd while Anya turned to look at his face.
